Another species, which had previously been considered Anigozanthos fuliginosus and commonly known as the Black Kangaroo Paw, has been transferred to its own monotypic genus and is now known as Macropidia fuliginosa.
Description
The plant grows with short rhizomes, underground and horizontal. The duration and nature of these may vary between species: some are plump, others are fragile. The sap in the root system enables plants to survive in extreme dryness.
The plants have a large base of rosette leaves from green to grayish green. The leaves of some species are hairy. From the heart of this emerging rosette long leafless stems that can reach 2 m, which ends in a bunch of flowers.
The size and height of these stems varies among species. Flowers can be different colors, ranging from almost black to yellow, tubular shape of the flower bud resembles a kangaroo paw, hence its name.
The flower at the tip spreads like a fan with six petals. When they have grown plants can take up to ten flowers at the end of each stem.
In recent years a series of numerous hybrids and cultivars have been developed. Being much in demand for plants and cut flowers.
Distribution and habitat
These perennial plants are endemic to areas with dry sand and silica in southwestern Australia, but also occur in a variety of other environments and soil types. They are grown commercially in Australia, the United States, Japan and Israel.
