Calla

Calla is a monotypic genus of flowering plants in the family Araceae, containing a single species Calla palustris. It is native to cold regions of the northern hemisphere, eastern, northern and central Europe, France and Norway, northern Asia and North America (Alaska, Canada, northeast USA. UU.).

Description

It is a rhizomatous, herbaceous perennial that grows in ponds and swamps. The leaves are rounded to heart-shaped, 6-12 cm long and 4-12 cm wide with a petiole 10-20 cm.

The flowers are produced in a spadix, with greenish-yellow inflorescences . The fruit is a cluster of red berries, each containing several seeds.

Properties

The plant is very poisonous when fresh due to oxalic acid it contains, but the rhizomes are edible when boiled or dried.

It is used against rheumatism. Used in the treatment of colds and flu. A tea made from the dried root has been used in the treatment of flu, bleeding and edema and as a poultice on snake bites. The aerial stems are used in the treatment of leg pain.
