Saxegothaea

Saxegothaea is a genus of one species of conifer family Podocarpaceae, native to southern South America.

The species is known by its genus name, or sometimes as "cypress Prince Albert", although there is a cypress tree (Taxus) in South America it is known as mañío female maniu mañío female or male.

It is slow growing, long-lived evergreen tree, reaching 15-25 m high with a trunk 1 m in diameter.

The crust is thin and scaly, dark purple-brown. Leaves are arranged in an irregular spiral, lanceolate, 1.5-3 cm long, 2 mm wide, fairly hard with a prickly spine tip, dark green on the upper two glaucous blue-white bands of stomata on the underside.

The cones are 1 cm long, with 15-20 soft scales, usually only 2-4 scales each cone are fertile, with a single seed 3 mm in diameter.

Saxegothaea is endemic to the temperate rain forests of Valdivia in southern Chile and adjacent parts of Argentina, which is usually associated with and Fitzroya Pilgerodendron cupressoides.
