The Almond Spurge

Almond Spurge (Euphorbia amygdaloides) is on the Dutch Red List of plants as very rare and stable to slightly increased. The plant is also used in ornamental gardens, including the cultivar Euphorbia amygdaloides' Robbiae.

The evergreen plant is 10-100 cm long and has a biennial flowering stem. In the first year is at the top of a flowering stem often reddish leaf rosette. In the second year is on the peduncle or below the center of a closely packed leaves. The two bracts under the flowers are grown together. The crescent-shaped nectaries with two horns are on the edge of the wrapper. Almond Spurge blooms from April to May with yellow-green flowers. The fruit is a safe fruit with nearly smooth seeds.

Almond Spurge is found in relatively open deciduous forest in damp, calcareous soil. The plant is in Europe and Asia Minor. In the Netherlands, including the eastern slope Meuse in southern Limburg.

In the garden the best it can be planted in partial shade into humus rich soil. Above all to prevent mildew, where this plant is susceptible. A nice variety, commonly in garden center operators, E. amygdoloides "Purpura" more red leaves than the species.
