Episcia

Episcia (Episcia) is a genus in the family Gesneriaceae with about eight species. They are originally from tropical areas in Central and South America, but they are grown as ornamental and indoor plants and in warmer areas, it is not unusual for them to spread into the wild.

Episcia includes evergreen, permanent herbs. The leaves usually have a definite pattern and this is perhaps the biggest reason for their popularity as potted plants. The flowers have femflikig crown and is usually red, but also orange, pink or yellow flowers appear.

There has been an endless number of varieties and hybrids of Episcia, mainly through selection and crosses between species of copper sheet (E. cupreata) and revkopparblad (E. reptans).

Prior to 1978 included many more species in the genus, but all except the eight which was separated into the independent genera Paradrymonia, Chrysothemis, Nautilocalyx and Alsobia. Recent genetic research supports this distinction.
