Abelia

Abelia is a genus of the family Caprifoliaceae (included in the classification Linnaeaceae APG). The genus name comes from its discoverer, the doctor Clarke Abel, who came in early 1800 in China where he devoted himself to studying the flora, discovering, among others, the A. chinensins.

Description

Includes about 20 species of shrubs and numerous hybrids originating in Asia and used as ornamental plants in gardens or hedges remote spots, or for pot cultivation, the species most known is the Abelia chinensis originated in China and imported into Italy in 1844, bushy perennial shrub, vigorous, and reaches 2 m high, sharp-toothed ovate leaves have a reddish color, blooms in late spring or summer with numerous bell-shaped flowers of white-pink, dark pink or red brought the leaf axil; other ornamental species is A. floribunda from Mexico has a more modest growth and a later flowering than the previous species with deep pink flowers; most effect A. triflora original Himalayan flowering in early April-May.

Cultivation

Prefers medium sun sheltered from cold winds in the northern regions, while also providing the mulch with peat at the foot of the plant and a plastic sheet on the hair, wants fresh and fertile soil, is also cultivated in pots with ease. Is multiplied by cuttings.
