Features
These are perennial herbaceous plants, the plant height of 10 cm in length and 50 cm and rhizomes form. There are both evergreen species, as well as species whose aboveground organs die off in winter. The plants are hairy throughout.
The always basal leaves often wear a brownish drawing along the leaf ribs. They are heart-shaped in outline. The edge is more or less lobed strong: In some species the leaves are almost to the midrib cut finger-in others they are just deep cut. The stipules are small.
The fivefold flowers are at a 10-50 cm long pedunculated grape. The flower gives it five sepals and petals that are white to pink. There are ten per flower stamens and two carpels present. All species flower in spring. Are formed capsule fruit, which contain few, black, smooth seeds.
Distribution and systematics
The genus Tiarella is composed of six species that occur as a ground cover in shady herbaceous plants to partially shaded sites in forests of temperate and cooler areas of the northern hemisphere.

The species T. trifoliata and T. unifoliata from western North America are also known as Tiarella trifoliata sensu lato summarized. They are significantly larger than their eastern relatives.
In the forests of East Asia (Japan, China to Nepal and northern India) comes from the nature of Tiarella polyphylla.
